Queer Comic Book Characters: Willow Rosenberg (Oct 12th)

Willow Rosenberg, along with the rest of the cast of Buffy: the Vampire Slayer, started out on the small screen. But now, she appears in the comic book, which continues the series.

Willow herself was a breakthrough as one of the first lesbian characters on network television. Willow is a computer nerd, the bookish smart one, and a witch. She’s one of Buffy’s best friend, and her and Xander have been friends since they were in kindergarten. Continue reading “Queer Comic Book Characters: Willow Rosenberg (Oct 12th)”

Queer Comic Book Characters: Ramsey Spencer (Oct 11th)

Ramsey first appears in Manhunter Vol 3 #2, and he spends most of his time the comic book as an six-year-old. Which means there’s a lot of him doing kid things like playing with his robot dog Thor, hanging out with his great-grandparents who are conveniently metahumans and still alive, and wanting to spend more time with his mother, Kate aka Manhunter.

Most of time, I’m not a huge fan of children in comics, but Marc Andreyko does a wonderful job at weaving him into the fabric of Kate’s story. A couple times he gets himself into trouble. Continue reading “Queer Comic Book Characters: Ramsey Spencer (Oct 11th)”

Queer Comic Book Characters: Paulie Bridges (Oct 10th)

I will try my hardest not to go on a rant about Garth Ennis. For those of you who’ve never read an Ennis comic book, he takes things to a new level. He always starts with a stereotype and then drives it all the way. Paulie Bridges is no exception.

Paulie Bridges

Paulie is a New York City cop in Ennis’ Preacher. He’s extremely good at his job. Paulie’s skills are put into direct contrast with his clumsy and messed-up partner, John Tool. (Spoiler alert: If you plan on reading Preacher, don’t read any further.) Continue reading “Queer Comic Book Characters: Paulie Bridges (Oct 10th)”

Queer Comic Book Character: Loki (Oct 9th)

Loki is Thor’s mischievous trickster god brother and often Thor’s enemy as well. He’s a super-villain who’s generally portrayed as being completely out for himself. He’s based on the Norse God both in personality and powers.

For most of his long-run in Marvel Comics, Loki is portrayed as a man. However, when the Norse Gods are all killed — Loki is beheaded by Thor — all the Gods are reborn in canon. And Loki is reborn as a woman. Loki seems to enjoy her female body and constantly refers to herself as “her.” However, it is revealed that Loki is more two-spirited than transgendered at rebirth given Loki’s male form is inside her body. (Comic book plotlines can be so impossible to describe.)

In her new form, Loki claims she can’t lie anymore. But if that’s true, she can still go about tricking people with the truth and causing havoc against her brother Thor. She also joins Norman Osborn’s secret cabal with Doctor Doom, Emma Frost, Namor, and the Hood. Loki seems to be the wildcard which Norman’s placing his bets on will be helpful when she’s needed. Osborn promises her Asgard as the Cabal plots to take over the world. Continue reading “Queer Comic Book Character: Loki (Oct 9th)”

Queer Comic Book Character: Christian Frost (Oct 8th)

I’m sad to say that I missed yesterday the 7th. I was foiled by my vacation and lack of internet access. No, not everyone’s grandma has the internet at her home. Anyway, without further ado…

Christian Frost

Christian Frost is Emma Frost’s older brother. He appears mostly in more recent back-stories concerning Emma and the rest of the Frost family. Christian was set to takeover the Frost empire and is portrayed as the least rebellious and the only non-mutant of all the Frost children. He was very close to his sister Emma. Queer Comic Book Characters: Achilles (Oct 6th)

A gay icon for decades, Wonder Woman finally got a gay friend. Okay, first she had a gay enemy. One who rides an awesome flying elephant named Mysia.

Achilles, aka The Olympian

Achilles came to Themyscira as part of Zeus’ attempt to force peace into the world. First, Achilles gets himself the heart of a god (Kane Milohai’s after Zeus kills him). Second, Achilles and his fellow Olympian soldiers (men) storm the U.N. building in DC. Wonder Woman shows up to stop him. Continue reading “Queer Comic Book Characters: Achilles (Oct 6th)”

Queer Comic Book Characters: Victoria Hand

Victoria is awesome. She was by far my favorite part of the whole Dark Reign business where she served as Norman Osborn’s right hand. In fact, she was the sanity to his every crazy plot. I love when she was in control and being the only who was awesome at her job.

Queer Comic Characters: Aleksandr Creote (Oct 3rd)

Created by author Gail Simone, Creote started out as a villain, reformed, then became slightly villainous, and now may be completely in the good hero fold again. To most, Creote is a former KGB special agent and the muscle. But if he has one defining characteristic, it’s his love for and devotion to Brian “Savant” Durlin.

When first introduced, Savant and Creote capture Black Canary in order to discover just who Oracle is. Savant is a computer genius battling Oracle, who’s been stopping his crimes. Savant is the one who beats Black Canary on the orders of Savant. It’s quickly clear that Savant is oblivious to Creote’s affections for him. And also that Creote is far more than just the muscle in his and Savant’s relationship, in all its varying states.

However, Oracle (aka Barbara Gordon) manages to reform both of the two criminals, and she brings them into the Birds of Prey. Continue reading “Queer Comic Characters: Aleksandr Creote (Oct 3rd)”

Queer Comic Book Characters: Daken Akihiro (Oct 2nd)

Not all queer characters are good people. Daken is a sociopath and a killer. In fact, he’s rather a bad stereotype of a predatory bisexual person. He can generate pheromones to attract and manipulate people. Only instead of breaking your heart, he may just break your neck. Daken’s also the son of Wolverine. Maybe that isn’t surprising. (Yep, just being a Wolverine hater.)
