Marvel Movies and Super Boys

Prozacpark made a post about Superheroines, Women, Marvel Movies, and that Avengers movie and how superheroine movies are few…in fact, zero. She also talks about how a She-Hulk movie would be totally awesome.

And I can’t help but agree.

What will Marvel be making instead of a She-Hulk movie?

2009 – X-Men Origins: Wolverine and X-Men Origins: Magneto
2010 – Iron Man 2 and Thor
2011 – Spider-Man 4, The First Avenger: Captain America, The Avengers
2012 – Ant-Man

Okay, we’ll assume that X-Men movies will have some super women in them, but they’re definitely focusing on Wolverine and Magneto.

What’s the line-up Jon Feavreau told USA Today they wanted to go with for The Avengers movie?

“The ones Marvel is talking about now are Captain America, Hulk, Thor, Ant-Man and Iron Man. I would love to see that.”

Okay, those are all the first Avengers, except the Wasp. You know the only woman on the team. At least, we’ll have Samuel L. Jackson to have a minority interacting with the team as head of S.H.I.E.L.D.

I’d love a She-Hulk movie. I’d love a Ms. Marvel movie. I’d love to see the Wasp on the Avengers team like she’s supposed to be. It would be a great way to introduce the non-comic audience to a least one female Marvel superhero.

Seriously, they’re making a Thor movie? How bad is that going to be, especially if they make him talk like they do in the comics?

I’d much rather have an original She-Hulk movie where they cameo the Hulk and show him in all the previews too.

But at the very least, give the Wasp her due and put her in the Avengers movie.

  1. I think a Thor movie will probably be better than an Ant-Man movie. I mean, even if Ant-Man is great, will anyone go see a movie titled “Ant-Man”? I doubt it.

I am totally with you, but that goes without saying. In fact, I think most straight guys would LOVE to see a She-Hulk movie.

  2. I don’t know. Ant-Man can be the kind of asshole that Iron Man was; that is if you leave out the wife-beating. But you’re right in that it’s a stupid name. Thor might piss off too many mythology students.

Yes, they would. It’s no joke that when you Google Image or eBay She-Hulk, you get tons of “original artwork.”

  3. I’m a myth-student and I don’t think it’ll piss me off one bit. Thor’s myth stands on its own and probably for its own good, its not the same Norsemen from classical literary texts; but the God of Thunder from Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s minds. If anything, I’m optimistic about Thor, it just might wash away the stench of myth-films like CLASH OF TITANS and the PERCY JACKSON series (granted, the latter has its audience, but it’s still far from the same respectability as … say Iron Man or The Dark Knight in terms of cinema genre). If Kenneth Branagh can inspire his peers to make mythopoeic superhero films, then I’m sure that Wonder Woman movie would get a bit of a boost in the money-making debates.

As for THE AVENGERS, I think they simply want to wait in on Ant-Man and The Wasp for a possible sequel. Yeah, it eschews continuity, but that’s how adaptations (apparently) work, right? Also, since we’ll be having Black Widow the feminist in me won’t cringe (at least I hope she doesn’t). I’d love to see Ant-Man and the Wasp in their own little film before The Avengers Return.

    1. The more I’ve seen of the Thor stuff, the more that I think it’s going to turn out to be a better movie than I first thought. Thor’s still not my favorite character, but I’ll be seeing the film.

Let’s hope that someone can get a Wonder Woman movie/tv show made and actually show it.

But with just the Black Widow, the Avengers film still won’t pass the Bechdel Test. Besides, the first Avengers movie wouldn’t have to cover Ant-Man and the Wasp relationship, beyond that they were dating. They would just be other characters. Besides I really want to see Jan’s expression when they find Captain America’s body in ice as that’s one of my favorite parts of those old comics.
