Queer Comic Book Character: Thunder (Oct 27th)

Anissa Pierce aka Thunder is the daughter of Black Lightening. She is a medical student, and her father does not want her to become a superhero and instead continue with her studies. After graduation, Anissa puts on her costume and a wig and goes out to fight as Thunder. She’s recruited almost right away by the Red Arrow to be part of the Outsiders.

Thunder has the power to increase her mass, while maintaining her volume. When she does this, she’s nearly immovable and almost invulnerable. Thunder also can create shock-waves while stomping on the ground.

When Black Lightening finds out that his daughter is part of the Outsiders, he orders her to quit. However, as a compromise, he temporarily joins the team. Eventually, Black Lightening sees that his daughter enjoys being a superhero and lets her be.

As part of the Outsiders, Thunder goes deep undercover in the African country Mali. The Outsiders attempt to overthrow the government there, and Thunder pretends to have a sexual relationship with Mali’s ruler, Ratun Bennin. However, she actually uses a hallucinogen to trick him. Eventually, Thunder reveals herself as an undercover agent and ruins the mission when she attacks Mali’s army to protect a village.

Also during this plotline, her romantic relationship with teammate Grace Choi is revealed. Their relationship is retconned to have started a while ago.

Batman kicks Thunder off the Outsiders as he believes her to be incompetent. She is replaced by Martian Manhunter. However, Grace continues to bring Thunder along on missions. During Batman R.I.P., Thunder and the rest of the Outsiders receive a message from the missing Batman. It turns out this is a booby-trap by Simon Hurt, Batman’s big enemy. There’s an explosion, and Thunder is injured. She’s currently in a coma.

I think if Batman can be brought back from the dead with time-travel, it’s time to bring Thunder back.
