Queer Comic Book Characters: Victoria Hand

Victoria is awesome. She was by far my favorite part of the whole Dark Reign business where she served as Norman Osborn’s right hand. In fact, she was the sanity to his every crazy plot. I love when she was in control and being the only who was awesome at her job.

Before running Osborn’s evil empire, Victoria was a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent. A disgruntled one who thought that Nick Fury wasn’t doing a good job at running the place. (Oh, Victoria, you are a woman after my own heart.) Victoria was also dating a woman named Isabelle, who’s another less disgruntled S.H.I.E.L.D. agent. Going against her girlfriend’s advice, Victoria sends an angry letter to Fury and gets put in Portland, defending people from the smell of patchouli. Her girlfriend dumps her.

Nothing like being demoted and losing your lady love in one day.

When the regime changes, Osborn hires Victoria to run H.A.M.M.E.R. among other things. And she does a damn good job at it. Victoria keeps his team of psycho-and-sociopathic superheroes in check and the humans going. She keeps Osborn in check when he goes after Tony Stark. She also keeps Moonstone, Bullseye, Daken, Ares, and the rest of the Dark Avengers from ripping each other to shreds or going off their meds and/or therapy.

Norman Osborn and Victoria
Behind every powerful man, there's a more competent woman.

Victoria’s so good at her job that when all of Osborn’s people are arrested, Captain America himself pardons her. Actually, he wants to give her a job. Because Steve Rogers realizes Victoria’s a patriot who only wants the best for her country. Currently, she’s working with the New (New) Avengers as their liaison to S.H.I.E.L.D. and the one who watches the big picture of all their battles. Of course, she doesn’t hit it off very well with Jessica Jones as she sends Jessica into mommy-bear mode in their first encounter.

To Victoria's surprise, Captain America wants to employ her. Yes, she's that awesome.

After her first meeting with the New New Avengers, Victoria considers how jail may be an easier, less stressful assignment.

Victoria is awesome, and I’m happy that she’s still appearing in a comic book that I read.

  1. Huh, I thought I had kept up on the whole “Dark Reign” stuff, but somehow I missed the whole “victoria is a lesbian” thing.

Of course, I always thought in the back of my mind she was a clone of the Baroness (from G.I. Joe) who didn’t know it ^_^
