Firestar #1Erica Gives This Comic Four StarsFirestar by Sean McKeever

For a while I wasn’t sure how I felt about this book. She Has No Head! pointed out that Firestar is written more like a Lifetime movie-of-the-week than a superhero comic book. Personally, I think there’s a place for Lifetime-like books. However, Marvel’s marketing department and distribution needs to do some catching up before books like this will actually sell where they should.

I do think Angelica’s a little too perfect here. She just survived cancer. And she’s going to school. She has a wonderful relationship with her father, which is actually good to see given how a lot of parent-child relationships are messed up in comic books. Then her arch-enemy shows up as her dad’s girlfriend’s kid. They fight (verbally). And then saves her arch-enemy from drinking and driving and they make up.

What I liked most about this comic was Rios’ art. I became a big fan of it in Girl Comics, and this is very excellent. I love her smooth-style. I hope she gets a lot of work in the future.

I do think this comic is a good set-up for McKeever’s Avengers’ title, Young Allies.

  1. I was one of the few that thought Sean did an excellent job on Teen Titans. Compared to how this book will look after JT Krul is done with it. Sean could use some better projects that challenge his ability as a writer at Marvel and a Firestar solo series is a great place to start. If Marvel ever launches another ongoing starring a female other than Black Widow.

    1. @Tarja — I haven’t read his Teen Titans. But I did love his Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane run. He will be writing Firestar on a team, but not in her own book. I’m really bummed that Marvel canceled all their female lead titles except Black Widow.
