Pyppenia has the most adorable pet fennec fox. I like this fennec fox trend in comic book. I’m behind this.
I’m so happy to be reading another book featuring Del Deuca’s art. Her designs are so lovely, and I’m greatly enjoying how she’s putting together this world. No doubt, drawing all those bones must’ve taken her forever.
Cyrenic’s an interesting character. I take it that these knights are ones brought back from the dead? Or only the ones who are the best and to protect the royal family brought back from the dead? I want to know more about how one becomes a sleepless knight and the consequences.
I’m betting it’s King Surno, Pyppenia’s uncle, who’s trying to kill her. Makes sense that even though she’s an illegitimate daughter she’d still be a threat to his full reign. She certainly seems to have the loyalty of people about the court.
Leotta is correct in what Pyppenia should do in order to stay safe, and her ominous warning that the court has changed. No doubt, things have changed very quickly.
For a first issue, this definitely peaked my interest. I’m looking forward to the next issue and continuing to see what happens in this world.

There’s a lot of groundwork happening here. I’m sure the pieces will fall together.
In Cyrenic’s conversation with Gert, it’s clear that the Sleepless have a timeline. They will only last for so long. Interesting that their minds start to go, or at least not know how to interrupt time. Makes me wonder if that’s when they die, or if they can go into another deep sleep (or whatever) and be awakened at some point. Cyrenic doesn’t seem to be at 100%. I suppose you do eventually degrade mentally without sleep.
This means that at some point, Pyppenia will be without Cyrenic’s protection. And he’s more likely to mess up the closer he gets to whenever he sleeps/dies.
No one is surprised that Pyppenia cannot get permission to leave the royal court. I don’t need to be a seer to see that. Also, not shocking her mother wasn’t on that ship. I don’t know if I think the new seer can be trusted.
Princess Rellen isn’t Pyppenia’s favorite person, and it seems like Cyrenic may spend a lot of his remaining energy being a knight.

We got some answers about Cyrenic’s history. Or that he wasn’t dead before becoming a Sleepless, and fought as a general soldier with Pyppenia’s father in a war. But that he’s been pledged to her since she was a girl and there’s some kind of magic which bonds them.
Which is all the more hurtful that she chose to pick Rellen’s favorite soldier as her favored to win the tournament. This also showed Pyppenia’s young age in her instance to please others and how she doesn’t quite understand the politics of the court. Rellen’s zits also remind us of their ages.
Of course, Cyrenic won the games. That’s just who he is. This other guy’s the worst. But who knows what level of threat he actually made.
